Linus was born in 10 CE in Tuscany. Traditionally listed as the second bishop of Rome, Linus is said by the early Church writer Irenaeus to have been appointed by the apostles Peter and Paul to lead the Roman church after Peter's death. He is often identified with the Linus mentioned in the Second Epistle to Timothy as sending greetings. Very little reliable information about his life survives, and his dates are uncertain. The later Liber Pontificalis gives details that are of doubtful historical value. He is venerated as a saint and a martyr in the Catholic Church, and named in the Roman Canon of the Mass.
