Twenty-first Dynasty of Egypt

from c. 1,077 BCE to 943 BCE

The Twenty-first Dynasty of Egypt ruled during the Third Intermediate Period, after the end of the New Kingdom, from the city of Tanis in the Nile Delta, while the high priests of Amun controlled Upper Egypt from Thebes. Its first king was Smendes, and the later ones included Psusennes I and Siamun. Though the country was divided in practice, the two parts were linked by family and marriage, and generally lived in peace. The dynasty is known for the rich royal tombs found at Tanis, including the silver coffin of Psusennes I, and for the royal mummies hidden at Thebes. It ended when a Libyan general, Shoshenq I, took the throne and founded the Twenty-second Dynasty.
