Twentieth Dynasty of Egypt

from c. 1,189 BCE to 1,077 BCE

The Twentieth Dynasty was the last dynasty of the New Kingdom of ancient Egypt, and it began with Setnakhte, who restored order after a period of turmoil. Its best-known pharaoh was Ramesses III, who defeated invasions by the Sea Peoples and the Libyans and built the temple of Medinet Habu. Under the later kings, all named Ramesses, from IV to XI, Egypt's power declined, with economic problems, grain shortages, the first recorded labour strike at Deir el-Medina and corruption involving tomb robbery. The high priests of Amun at Thebes grew powerful, and after the dynasty ended, Egypt split between rulers in the north and the south.
