The United Kingdom of Israel is the name given to the kingdom described in the Hebrew Bible as having been ruled by Saul, David and Solomon, with its capital at Jerusalem, where Solomon is said to have built the Temple. After Solomon's death, the Bible says the kingdom split into the northern Kingdom of Israel and the southern Kingdom of Judah. The historicity of the united monarchy is debated by scholars. Some regard the biblical account as essentially accurate, while others, relying on archaeology, argue that any such state was much smaller than described. The Tel Dan stele, which mentions the House of David, is evidence for a dynasty of David in the ninth century BCE.
