Twenty-fifth Dynasty of Egypt

from 747 BCE to 656 BCE

The Twenty-fifth Dynasty was a line of pharaohs from Kush, the Nubian kingdom to the south of Egypt, who conquered and ruled Egypt during the Third Intermediate Period, when it was divided among local rulers. Piye started the conquest from Napata in the Sudan, and his successors Shabaka, Shebitku, Taharqa and Tanutamun restored temples and revived old artistic styles, building pyramids in Nubia as well. They came into conflict with the expanding Assyrian Empire, which invaded Egypt several times and sacked Thebes. Taharqa and Tanutamun were driven south, and the dynasty ended when Psamtik I of Sais took control of Egypt. The Kushite kings are sometimes called the Black Pharaohs.
