Twenty-fourth Dynasty of Egypt

from 727 BCE to 715 BCE

The Twenty-fourth Dynasty of Egypt was a brief dynasty based at Sais in the western Nile Delta, in the period when Egypt was divided among many local rulers. It is represented by two kings, Tefnakht, who built a coalition of Delta rulers and tried to extend his power southward, and his successor Bakenranef, known to the Greeks as Bocchoris. Their expansion was checked by the Kushite king Piye, who marched north from Nubia and defeated Tefnakht's alliance, though he left the Delta rulers in place. Bakenranef was later overthrown by Piye's successor Shabaka, who united the country under the Twenty-fifth Dynasty of Kushite pharaohs. The Saite dynasty of the following century was based in the same city.
