The Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca ended the Russo-Turkish War of 1768 to 1774 and was signed in a village now in Bulgaria. Russia gained the ports of Azov and Kerch, the land between the Dnieper and Bug rivers, access to the Black Sea and the right to sail commercial ships through the Ottoman straits. The Crimean Khanate was declared independent of the Ottoman Empire, which in practice put it under Russian influence, and Russia annexed it in 1783. Russia also obtained the right to build a church in Constantinople and to make representations on behalf of Orthodox Christians, which it later claimed as a right to protect all Orthodox subjects of the sultan. The treaty marked a turning point in the balance of power between the two empires.
