Tien Quan Ca, or The Marching Song, is the national anthem of Vietnam, composed by the musician and artist Van Cao. He wrote it in the 1940s, during the struggle against French and Japanese control, and it was first published in a newspaper of the Viet Minh independence movement. It was sung at a large rally in Hanoi during the August Revolution and was adopted as the anthem of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. The anthem was kept as the national song after reunification in 1976, with revised lyrics, and it is played at official ceremonies. Van Cao was also a painter and poet, and he is regarded as one of the founders of modern Vietnamese music.
