Thirtieth Dynasty of Egypt

from 380 BCE to 343 BCE

The Thirtieth Dynasty was the last native dynasty to rule ancient Egypt before the Persian reconquest, founded by Nectanebo I after he came to power in a coup. Its rulers governed from Sebennytos in the Nile Delta and succeeded in defending Egypt against Persian attempts at reconquest, helped by Greek mercenaries. They also carried out a great deal of temple building and repair, and Nectanebo I and his successors are remembered for their sculpture and for temples such as the one at Philae. The last pharaoh, Nectanebo II, was defeated by the Persian king Artaxerxes III, who brought Egypt back under Persian rule, and Nectanebo fled south, probably to Nubia. A few years later, Alexander the Great took the country from the Persians.
