Corinthian War

from 395 BCE to 387 BCE

The Corinthian War was fought between Sparta and an alliance of Thebes, Athens, Corinth and Argos, after the Spartans had emerged as the dominant power in Greece at the end of the Peloponnesian War. Resentment of Spartan control, helped by Persian money sent to Sparta's enemies, drove the coalition to war, and the fighting took place on land around Corinth and at sea, where the Athenian general Conon, using Persian ships, destroyed the Spartan fleet at Cnidus. Sparta won on land but could not end the conflict, and it turned to Persia to arrange a settlement. The result was the King's Peace, also called the Peace of Antalcidas, which gave the Greek cities of Asia Minor to Persia and gave Persia a decisive influence over Greek politics.
