Hippocrates died in 370 BCE in Larissa, aged about 90. An ancient Greek physician from the island of Kos, Hippocrates is traditionally called the father of medicine because he and his followers treated disease as a natural process with natural causes rather than as divine punishment. A collection of about sixty medical writings, the Hippocratic Corpus, bears his name, although scholars believe most of it was written by various authors, and it emphasizes careful observation, diet and prognosis. The Hippocratic Oath, a pledge of ethical conduct for physicians, is attributed to this tradition. The few biographical facts known are uncertain, and the dates given for his life are approximate.
