The Third Crusade was launched after the Muslim leader Saladin defeated the crusader kingdom of Jerusalem at the Battle of Hattin and then recaptured Jerusalem itself. It was led by three of Europe's most powerful rulers: the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, who drowned in a river in Anatolia on the way, Philip II of France, and Richard I of England. The crusaders retook Acre after a long siege and defeated Saladin's army at Arsuf, but could not take Jerusalem. A truce allowed Christian pilgrims to visit the city, while the crusaders kept a strip of the coast. Richard was captured on his journey home and held for ransom.
