The Last Supper is a mural by Leonardo da Vinci painted on the end wall of the refectory of the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. It was made for the duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza, in the second half of the 1490s. It shows the moment during the final meal of Jesus with his twelve apostles when he announces that one of them will betray him, and the apostles react in groups with varied gestures of shock and denial. Leonardo used an experimental technique on dry plaster instead of true fresco, and the paint began to flake within years. The work survived the bombing of the building in 1943, and a long restoration was completed in 1999.
