House of Tudor

from 22 August 1485 to 24 March 1603

The House of Tudor ruled England and Wales and the Lordship of Ireland, and was of Welsh origin. It came to power when Henry VII defeated Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field, which ended the Wars of the Roses, and he restored order and finances to the crown. His son Henry VIII broke with the Catholic Church over his marriages, which led to the English Reformation, and the dynasty's later monarchs were Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I. Elizabeth's long reign saw the defeat of the Spanish Armada and a flowering of English drama. With her death, childless, the crown passed to James VI of Scotland, of the House of Stuart.
