Titian was born in 1490 in Pieve di Cadore. An Italian painter of the Venetian school, Titian was the leading artist of the sixteenth-century Venetian Renaissance and one of the most versatile painters of his time. He worked for popes, for the emperor Charles V and for Philip II of Spain, producing portraits, religious scenes and mythological paintings such as Bacchus and Ariadne and the Venus of Urbino. Famed for his rich color and loose, expressive brushwork, which became freer in his later years, he influenced Rubens, Velazquez and Rembrandt. He died in Venice, probably of plague, while still working.
