The Sui dynasty reunified China after nearly four centuries of division, following the fall of the Han dynasty. Yang Jian, who became Emperor Wen, took power in the north and then conquered the southern Chen dynasty. His government revived a unified bureaucracy, a new legal code and the equal-field land system. His son Emperor Yang undertook huge projects, notably the Grand Canal linking the Yellow and Yangtze river regions, and the rebuilding of the Great Wall, but he also launched costly campaigns against Goguryeo in Korea. Heavy taxation, forced labour and military failure led to rebellions, and Yang was murdered. The Tang dynasty, founded by Li Yuan, inherited many Sui institutions.
