Fourteenth Dynasty of Egypt

from c. 1,786 BCE to 1,600 BCE

The Fourteenth Dynasty of Egypt was a line of local rulers in the eastern Nile Delta during the Second Intermediate Period, when the central authority of the Middle Kingdom had broken down. Its kings, some of whom bear names of Canaanite origin, appear to have been of Asiatic descent, and ruled from a base probably at Avaris or Xois, as the Egyptian state split into rival kingdoms. The dynasty is poorly documented, known mostly from the Turin King List, which is damaged, and a few scarabs and inscriptions, so its chronology and relation to the Thirteenth Dynasty are debated. It is thought to have been overrun by the Hyksos of the Fifteenth Dynasty, who established control over the Delta.
