The Second Balkan War broke out in the summer of 1913 when Bulgaria, dissatisfied with the division of territory in Macedonia after the First Balkan War, attacked its former allies Serbia and Greece. Romania then joined in and invaded Bulgaria from the north, and the Ottoman Empire took the opportunity to recover Edirne and part of eastern Thrace. Overwhelmed on several fronts, Bulgaria quickly asked for peace. The Treaty of Bucharest in August 1913 gave most of Macedonia to Serbia and Greece and southern Dobruja to Romania, leaving Bulgaria embittered. The resentment and the strengthened position of Serbia contributed to the tensions in the Balkans that helped lead to the First World War.
