Gerald Ford was born on 14 July 1913 in Gerald R. Ford Birthsite and Gardens. The 38th President of the United States, Ford served for decades as a Republican congressman from Michigan and became House minority leader. In 1973 he was appointed vice president after Spiro Agnew resigned, and in August 1974 he took the presidency when Richard Nixon resigned over Watergate. He is the only person to have held both offices without being elected to either. His decision to pardon Nixon a month later was controversial and probably hurt his standing with voters. His term dealt with inflation, the end of the Vietnam War and the Helsinki Accords, and he narrowly lost the 1976 election to Jimmy Carter.
