Romulus founds Rome (traditional date)

c. 754 BCE

According to Roman tradition, the twin brothers Romulus and Remus, sons of the war god Mars and raised by a she-wolf, founded the city of Rome on the Palatine Hill on 21 April 753 BC, after Romulus killed his brother in a quarrel over the site. The learned Roman scholar Varro fixed this date in the first century BC, and the Romans counted years from it. Archaeology shows that villages on the Roman hills date from the tenth to eighth centuries BC and merged into a city during the seventh century. Rome was ruled by kings, traditionally seven, until 509 BC.
