Erebuni Fortress is an ancient citadel on a hill in the south of Yerevan, Armenia, founded by the Urartian king Argishti I as an administrative and military outpost on the northern frontier of his kingdom. A cuneiform inscription found at the site records its foundation, and the city of Yerevan counts it as its birth. The fortress had a palace with columned halls, temples, storerooms for grain and wine, and walls painted with frescoes. After the fall of Urartu it was abandoned in the following centuries. Excavations in the twentieth century revealed the remains, and part of the fortress was reconstructed. A museum on the site displays finds, including inscriptions, pottery and weapons.
