Rise of House of Hohenzollern

11th century

The House of Hohenzollern is a German dynasty that rose from the counts of Zollern in Swabia in the eleventh century, taking its name from the Hohenzollern castle on a hill in southwest Germany. Different branches later ruled in different lands: the Swabian line held its original territories, while the Franconian line acquired Brandenburg in the fifteenth century and Prussia, which became a kingdom in 1701. Under Frederick the Great and later rulers, Prussia grew into a major European power, and in 1871 the Prussian king became German emperor. The last emperor, Wilhelm II, abdicated at the end of the First World War in 1918. A branch of the family also ruled Romania as kings from 1881 to 1947.
