Rise of Carlism

1830

Carlism is a Spanish political movement that began as a dynastic dispute over the royal succession. In 1830 King Ferdinand VII issued the Pragmatic Sanction setting aside the Salic law so that his daughter Isabella could inherit the throne, and his brother Carlos and his supporters refused to accept it. The Carlists upheld absolutist, traditionalist Catholic monarchy and defended regional charters called fueros, and their movement was strongest in Navarre, the Basque Country and Catalonia. They fought three Carlist Wars, in 1833 to 1840, 1846 to 1849 and 1872 to 1876. Carlist militias, the Requetés, supported Franco in the Civil War of 1936, after which the movement was absorbed into the regime's single party and lost its independent strength.
