The Anushtegin dynasty, also called the Khwarazmian dynasty, was founded by Anush Tigin Gharchai, a Turkic former slave of the Seljuk Turks who rose to be governor of the region of Khwarazm, south of the Aral Sea. Khwarazm lay on the lower Oxus, or Amu Darya, and its capital Gurganj was an important center of trade and learning. His son Qutb ad-Din Muhammad assumed the title of Khwarazmshah and began a hereditary line, formally acknowledging Seljuk authority. As Seljuk power declined, later rulers grew in strength, and under Ala ad-Din Muhammad the Khwarazmians held a large realm in Iran and Central Asia. The dynasty was destroyed in the 1220s by the Mongol invasion led by Genghis Khan.
