Release of Mastodon

5 October 2016

Mastodon is a free and open-source social networking service created by the German developer Eugen Rochko. Unlike centralized platforms, it is made up of many independent servers, called instances, run by different people and organisations, which can communicate with each other through open protocols such as ActivityPub, in a network known as the fediverse. Users post short messages, and each instance can set its own rules for moderation. After the takeover of Twitter by Elon Musk in 2022, the number of Mastodon users grew quickly as people looked for alternatives. It is managed by a non-profit organisation and is often cited as an example of decentralised social media.
