Release of Dumbo

23 October 1941

Dumbo is an animated film made by Walt Disney Productions, directed by Ben Sharpsteen and based on a children's story by Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl. It tells of a baby circus elephant with enormous ears who is mocked until he discovers he can fly, helped by a mouse called Timothy. At only about an hour long, it was made quickly and cheaply after the more costly Pinocchio and Fantasia had lost money. The film was a success, and it is remembered for scenes such as the dreamlike sequence Pink Elephants on Parade. It won the Academy Award for best original score, and it was later adapted in a live-action film in 2019.
