Release of Baidu

January 2000

Baidu is a Chinese technology company best known for the search engine that is the leading one in China. It was founded in Beijing by Robin Li and Eric Xu, and its name comes from a line of a Song dynasty poem about a long search. Li had earlier developed a link-analysis method for ranking websites. Baidu listed on Nasdaq in 2005, when its shares soared on the first day. It added services such as an online encyclopedia, discussion forums, maps and cloud storage, and it invested heavily in artificial intelligence and autonomous driving through its Apollo project. It launched the Ernie chatbot in 2023. Google withdrew its search service from mainland China in 2010, which strengthened Baidu's position.
