The Red Sea crisis refers to attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden by the Houthi movement of Yemen, which began after the start of the Israel–Hamas war in October 2023. The Houthis, who control much of Yemen, said they were acting in solidarity with the Palestinians and targeted ships linked to Israel and later others, using missiles, drones and the seizure of the vessel Galaxy Leader. Many shipping companies diverted vessels around Africa, sharply reducing traffic through the Suez Canal. The United States and the United Kingdom carried out air strikes on Houthi targets, and the European Union launched a naval mission to protect ships.
