Publication of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

1 September 1900

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a children's novel by the American author L. Frank Baum, illustrated by W. W. Denslow. It follows Dorothy, a Kansas farm girl carried by a tornado to the magical Land of Oz, where she befriends a Scarecrow, a Tin Woodman and a Cowardly Lion on a journey to ask the Wizard for help in getting home. Baum wanted to write a modern fairy tale that kept the wonder of older stories but left out their grim moralising. The book was an immediate success and led to thirteen further Oz novels by Baum. A hit stage musical followed in 1902, and the 1939 film made the story familiar to audiences worldwide.
