Heinrich Himmler was born on 7 October 1900 in Munich. A German Nazi leader, Himmler headed the SS from 1929 and, as Reichsfuhrer-SS, became one of the most powerful men in the Third Reich, controlling the police, the Gestapo and the concentration camp system. He was a chief organizer of the Holocaust, overseeing the Einsatzgruppen and the extermination camps in which millions of Jews, Roma and others were murdered, as well as the deportation and killing of political opponents. In the last months of the war he secretly tried to negotiate with the Western Allies, which led Hitler to strip him of his offices. He was captured by British forces and killed himself in custody by swallowing poison.
