Publication of The Jungle Book

1894

The Jungle Book is a collection of short stories by Rudyard Kipling, who was born in India. Most of the stories follow Mowgli, a boy raised by wolves in the Indian jungle, and his friends and enemies, including the bear Baloo, the panther Bagheera and the tiger Shere Khan. Other tales in the collection, including Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, tell of animals in India. The stories are written as fables, with a strong code of law and loyalty, and they were popular with both children and adults. A second volume followed the next year. The stories inspired the early Scouting movement, and have been adapted for stage, film and television, notably the animated Disney film.
