Launch of Billboard

1894

Billboard is an American magazine which covers the music industry and is best known for its record charts. It was started in Cincinnati as a trade paper for the bill posting and advertising business, and over the following decades it expanded to cover circuses, fairs, theatres and then the music business. It began publishing charts of the most popular records in the 1930s and 1940s, and in 1958 it introduced the Hot 100, which became the standard measure of pop success in the United States. The Billboard 200 for albums followed. The magazine is now owned by a media company, and it organises the Billboard Music Awards, though its charts remain its main influence.
