Publication of Sense and Sensibility

1811

Sense and Sensibility is the first novel published by Jane Austen, who issued it anonymously, listing the author only as a lady. It follows the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, who are left with little money after the death of their father and have to move to a cottage in Devon. Elinor represents sense, restraint and prudence, while Marianne stands for sensibility, passion and open feeling, and each sister's romantic experiences test her character. The novel pays close attention to the economic dependence of women in the period, in which marriage and inheritance determined security. It was well received and earned Austen a modest profit, and was adapted for film by Ang Lee in 1995.
