Publication of Heidi

1880

Heidi is a Swiss children's novel by Johanna Spyri, which was published in two parts. It tells the story of an orphaned girl who is sent to live with her gruff grandfather in a hut high in the Alps, and who brings joy to him and to the goatherd Peter. Heidi is later taken to Frankfurt as a companion for a sick girl, Clara, where she becomes homesick and sleepwalks, before she returns to her mountain home. The book celebrates nature, simple life and faith, and it contrasts the freedom of the mountains with the constraints of the city. It became one of the best-selling children's books in the world, and has been filmed many times.
