St James' Park is the football stadium of Newcastle United, standing on a hill close to the city center of Newcastle upon Tyne. Football has been played on the site since the 1880s, and Newcastle United took it over after the merger of local clubs in 1892. Its stands were rebuilt many times, and in the 1990s it was transformed into an all-seater stadium under the club's chairman Sir John Hall. With a capacity of over fifty thousand, it is one of the largest club grounds in England. The club was bought by a consortium led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund in 2021.
