Aegukka, meaning Patriotic Song, is the national anthem of North Korea. Its lyrics were written by the poet Pak Se-yong and the music was composed by Kim Won-gyun, in the years after the division of Korea in the late 1940s. The text praises the country's mountains and rivers, its long history and the strength of its people, and it was long associated with the cult of the ruling leader. Its title is the same as that of the South Korean anthem, but the two songs are entirely different. It is played at official events and international sports competitions.
