Origins of Mangup

3rd century

Mangup is a plateau fortress and cave town in the Crimean Mountains, once the capital of the Principality of Theodoro, a small Byzantine-Gothic state of the 14th and 15th centuries. The plateau was settled in antiquity, and a Byzantine fortress was built there in the 6th century. In the late Middle Ages the rulers of Theodoro, who were Orthodox Christians of Greek and Gothic background, fought the Genoese colonies on the coast and later the Ottomans. The Ottoman army under Gedik Ahmed Pasha took Mangup after a long siege in 1475, and the town gradually declined. The ruins include walls, a basilica, a palace and many caves, and a Karaite community also lived there.
