Construction of Diocletian's Palace

293 CE

Diocletian's Palace is a large fortified palace built for the Roman emperor Diocletian on the Adriatic coast, in what is now Split in Croatia, where he retired after abdicating in 305. Built of local limestone and marble, it combines the features of a luxurious villa with those of a military camp, with high walls, towers and four gates. After Diocletian's death, it stood empty for a while, and in the seventh century refugees from the nearby city of Salona took shelter within its walls. The palace gradually grew into the centre of the medieval town of Split, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
