Paul Dirac was born on 8 August 1902 in Bristol. A British theoretical physicist, Dirac was one of the founders of quantum mechanics. His 1928 equation combined quantum theory and special relativity to describe the electron and predicted the existence of antimatter, as the positron was found a few years later. He also developed the bra-ket notation, the Dirac delta function and early work on quantum field theory. He shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1933 with Erwin Schrodinger and held the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics at Cambridge. Known for his precision and reticence, he was a man of few words.
