Mozambican War of Independence

from 25 September 1964 to 8 September 1974

The Mozambican War of Independence was an armed struggle by the Mozambique Liberation Front, FRELIMO, against Portuguese colonial rule, which began in northern Mozambique with attacks from Tanzania. The movement was founded in 1962 by Eduardo Mondlane, who was assassinated in 1969, and led thereafter by Samora Machel. Portugal responded with large forces and the resettlement of villagers, but the war was costly and unpopular at home. The Carnation Revolution in Lisbon in April 1974 overthrew the regime, and the Lusaka Accord of September 1974 handed power to FRELIMO. Mozambique became independent in June 1975, and a civil war followed.
