Moche culture

from c. 100 CE to 700 CE

The Moche were a culture of the north coast of Peru, who built irrigated farmland and large adobe temple platforms in the river valleys between the Andes and the Pacific. Their main centres included the Huaca del Sol and Huaca de la Luna near today's Trujillo. They are famous for their realistic ceramics, which show portraits, animals, and scenes of ritual and warfare, and for rich metalwork. Royal tombs such as the Lord of Sipan, discovered in 1987, and the Lady of Cao reveal powerful rulers and priests. The Moche left no writing and were probably a group of related polities rather than a single empire, and their decline is often linked to severe climate shocks such as drought and El Nino floods.
