Trajan's Forum was the last and largest of the imperial fora of Rome, built by the emperor Trajan with the spoils of his Dacian wars and designed by the architect Apollodorus of Damascus. It included a large open square, the Basilica Ulpia, which was the largest basilica in Rome, and two libraries, one Greek and one Latin, flanking Trajan's Column. The column, about thirty-five meters high, is carved with a spiraling frieze that tells the story of the Dacian campaigns and still stands, with the emperor's ashes placed in its base. Trajan's Markets, a multilevel complex of shops and offices, rose on the slope of the Quirinal Hill behind the forum. Parts of the complex were later buried or destroyed and have been excavated.
