Launch of Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope

30 August 2026

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is a NASA infrared observatory named after Nancy Grace Roman, the agency's first chief astronomer, who is often called the mother of the Hubble Space Telescope. It has a 2.4-metre mirror, the same size as Hubble's, but a much wider field of view, so it can survey large areas of sky quickly. Its main goals are to study dark energy, to find exoplanets by gravitational microlensing and to image nearby planetary systems with a coronagraph. It was designed to operate near the Sun-Earth L2 point.
