Kingdom of Castile

from 1065 to 1833

The Kingdom of Castile emerged in the eleventh century as the former county of Castile became a kingdom, when Ferdinand I inherited it from his father Sancho III of Navarre and then also took Leon. The union of the two crowns was made permanent in 1230 under Ferdinand III, and Castile became the most important of the Christian kingdoms in the Iberian Peninsula, leading the conquest of Andalusia from the Muslims. Together with Aragon, it was joined by the marriage of Isabella I and Ferdinand II in 1469, and the Crown of Castile continued as a distinct legal and administrative unit within the Spanish monarchy until the nineteenth century. The Castilian language became the basis of modern Spanish.
