Khalji dynasty

from 1290 to 1320

The Khalji dynasty was the second of the five dynasties of the Delhi Sultanate, established by Jalaluddin Khalji, a Turkic military commander who overthrew the last of the Mamluk rulers. His nephew and successor Alauddin Khalji was the dynasty's most important ruler, who defeated several Mongol invasions, expanded the sultanate into Gujarat and Rajasthan, and sent his general Malik Kafur on expeditions deep into southern India. Alauddin introduced market controls to supply a large standing army cheaply, and carried out administrative reforms. After his death, weak rulers and palace intrigue led to chaos, and in 1320 Ghiyath al-Din Tughluq took the throne and started the Tughlaq dynasty.
