Kamehameha unites the Hawaiian Islands

1810

Kamehameha I, a chief from the island of Hawaii, won control of Maui and Oahu with the help of western guns and advisers, and in 1795 defeated the forces of Oahu at the Battle of Nuuanu. In 1810 the ruler of Kauai, Kaumualii, agreed to become his vassal, completing the unification of all the main islands into the Kingdom of Hawaii. Kamehameha traded sandalwood to China with British and American ships, and kept foreign settlers under control. The kingdom he founded lasted until 1893, when American businessmen overthrew Queen Liliuokalani, and the US annexed Hawaii in 1898. It became a state in 1959.
