Birth of Leo XIII

2 March 1810

Leo XIII was born on 2 March 1810 in Carpineto Romano. Born Vincenzo Gioacchino Pecci, he was pope for twenty-five years, one of the longest pontificates in history, and was elected at the age of sixty-eight. He is best known for the encyclical Rerum Novarum in 1891, which set out the Catholic Church's teaching on the rights of workers, fair wages and the dangers of both unrestrained capitalism and socialism, and became the foundation of modern Catholic social teaching. He also encouraged the study of the philosopher Thomas Aquinas, opened the Vatican Archives to researchers, and sought improved relations with governments. He lived to the age of ninety-three.
