The Ilinden-Preobrazhenie Uprising was a revolt against Ottoman rule in Macedonia and the Adrianople region of Thrace, organised by the Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organization. It was timed for the feast of St Elijah, called Ilinden, and then the Transfiguration, Preobrazhenie, and began in the Bitola region with attacks on Ottoman targets. The rebels briefly set up the short-lived Krushevo Republic and a commune in the Strandzha mountains. Large Ottoman forces crushed the uprising with heavy reprisals against villages, and many civilians were killed or became refugees. The revolt is still commemorated in North Macedonia and Bulgaria. It prompted international pressure for reforms in the Ottoman Balkans, but the changes were limited.
