Habsburg monarchy

from 29 August 1526 to 12 November 1918

The Habsburg monarchy was the collection of lands ruled by the House of Habsburg in Central Europe, which grew out of their possessions in Austria. After the death of King Louis II at the battle of Mohacs, Ferdinand I inherited the crowns of Bohemia and Hungary, which joined the Austrian lands. The monarchy later became the Austrian Empire, and, after the Compromise of 1867, Austria-Hungary, a state with many nationalities that included Germans, Hungarians, Czechs, Poles, Croats and others. It was a major European power for centuries, defending the continent against the Ottomans. It collapsed at the end of the First World War, when its peoples declared independence and Charles I gave up his role.
