Grand Duchy of Lithuania

from 1236 to 1795

The Grand Duchy of Lithuania was a state in northeastern Europe that grew from a pagan principality into one of the largest countries on the continent. Under rulers such as Gediminas and Vytautas it expanded south and east across much of present Belarus and Ukraine, taking over former lands of Kievan Rus. In 1386 its grand duke Jogaila married the Polish queen Jadwiga and became king of Poland, beginning a long dynastic link between the two countries. The union was made closer by the Union of Lublin and formed the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which was partitioned by Russia, Prussia and Austria in the late eighteenth century.
